Hardwater is any water that contains excess minerals or metals, such as calcium and magnesium. Although hard water is generally safe to use, it can cause a variety of problems related to cleaning, appliance life expectancy and efficiency. Although they can be designed to remove other metals such as arsenic, iron, selenium, and chromium and some radioactivity and nitrates, water softeners do not protect against protozoa, bacteria and viruses.
