Filtration is a physical process that occurs when liquids, gases, dissolved or suspended matter adhere to the surface of, or in the pores of, an absorbent medium. Filtration of contaminants depends on the amount of a contaminant, size and charge of the contaminant. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), filtration following treatment by activated carbon, pH adjustment or chlorine and other pre-treatment processes may extend the life of the filter's absorbent membrane and its effectiveness in removing protozoa (for example, Cryptosporidium, Giardia). It should be mentioned that filtration has moderate effectiveness in removing bacteria (for example, Campylobacter, Salmonella, Shigella, E. Coli) and not effective in removing viruses or chemicals.
Integra Environmental recommends micro filtration in conjunction with other water treatment systems.
